Marie Raleigh papers, 1931-1965.

This collection consists of personal papers of Marie Raleigh, also called Bertha Mary Raleigh, or Berta Raleigh. Included are correspondence, post cards, greeting cards, and printed items. Most of the correspondence, both before and after World War II, was written by her nephew, Dieter Hankel of Berlin, to acknowledge gifts. Included also are letters to Mrs. Raleigh from his family members in Germany, and between others.

Marie Raleigh was an aunt of Dieter Hankel, who, along with other family members living in Berlin, wrote to Raleigh during the years 1931-1959. These letters are addressed to Mrs. Raleigh at various addresses including Los Angeles, Shanghai, and New Orleans. Dieter Hankel studied at the Lehrerbildungsanstalt, a teachers' university in Esslinger. He was a member of the Hitler-Jugend, was captured as a lieutenant in Hitler's army near the English Channel, and was then held in England as a prisoner...
